Case Study

Case Study 1

This magazine cover shows the main feature of the magazine by the image and the cover line. The image that is on the front cover is of a rap artist called ‘Chipmunk’. The skyline sells the magazine and makes the target audience clear as it say “…for the young and ambitious”. The image shot is medium shot capturing his face and his upper body. They used really bright lighting the connotation for this is that it makes the magazine seem brighter as it brings out the colour in chipmunks face and what he is wearing. It also focuses on the artist bringing readers in and wanting them to find out more about the artist. There are no props in this image although the make-up that is used for the artists has made his facial feature more poignant than if no make-up was used. The pose the artist has done show him as innocent, it also shows that he can be stressed as he has one hand to his head. One of the captions reflects this ‘from London to Atlanta… Next top world domination’ it could link with the stress that he is going through moving from one city to another it also makes links to the issue called “make it happen issue” it shows that chipmunk is a determined to make his dreams happen. The masthead is in bold and in blue which contrasts with the white background bringing out the mast head the connotations of that is so that it entices readers and makes them want to read more. The use of teasers and cover line are good such as the size which are big enough to see it clearly. The language is to the specific target audience which I think would be young people as the words that are used are short and are not complex. The font that was used is clear so that the consumers can understand what has been written. The teasers are in bold again trying to engage the audience and the cover line in smaller font making the reader stop to read the cover lines so they then read the entire magazine. The image is framed with white to give an effect that the main image is meant to be seen as important as it’s been framed and not across the whole page.

The denotation is that there are 3 images shown on the contents page and then an advert on the left hand side also different colours such as pink, white, blue, red and black and finally there are some captions and textboxes. The 3 images seem to go in order of importance for example the main feature being chipmunk is at the top the connotation for this is so that he is important and also the readers can clearly see what page the main feature is on and also it doesn’t become frustrating looking through every page. The use of textboxes with captions have been used the connotation for this is so that the reader will have a brief summary of what that particular article is about. The headers are bold ad colourful the connotation behind that is that it stands out for the readers and makes them too read on. The page layout of the contents page is that the images are big and are on the left hand side whereas the writing is on the right hand side and is in smaller font. The connotation behind that is because of audience they are trying to target which is teenagers and with the images being bigger and the text being smaller is makes the magazine seem appropriate for that age group and not come across as too boring. The language that is used for this magazine are simple and to the point, it also there is not much use of intellectual words the reason behind that is so the target audience don’t get uninterested, the use of simple words also makes is quicker to read and keeps the readers wanting to read more and it also reminds us that the target audience is for young people.

The image shows the artist standing up holding on to his hat with two hands and looking directly at the camera the connotation behind that can come across as cocky but also cute as he is looking directly into the camera , capturing the reader. It also link to the quote when he says “This time I feel free to say anything I like , going for it, man!” it links as he is leaning forward looking like he is ready to grab something or run towards something and it also shows that he is confident by saying he feels free to say anything he wants. The t-shirt he is wearing labelled ‘London boy’ matches up to the personality of cocky as this is what the stereotype of ‘’London boys ‘are. The image also overlaps the text on the left hand side, the connotation behind this is because it makes a link that the image and the text are meant to be linked together. The magazine quotes the artist saying “This time I feel free to say anything I like. Going for it, man! ” this quote links to the image portraying confidence  The text is in columns this is so it gives the page structure this is so it’s not jumbled up on the page and is clear to read. The skyline links to the article as it says ‘feature’ and chipmunk is the feature of the magazine. The website is situated at the bottom right hand corner so it reminds readers where they can go to get more information about the magazine this is called branding. The language again is kept simple so the reader is kept interested, the text is spoken in 1st person the connotation behind this is so you can feel like you’re in the interviewer’s shoes and that you interviewing chipmunk. This makes the readers want to read more to see more of the article. The colours used are red; black and white which are unisex colours as the target audience is just young people it shows that it is for all different types of young people.
